2MW Generator Crank (October 12, 2006)

25

New 2MW Cat Generator for the main hospital at my former workplace. We had a contractor in doing the annual PM work on the machine. When he went to start it, we realized that Cat’s design to place the fuel filter on top of the machine mounted horizontally was a bad idea. Just watch…

Bet the starter was hell hot after cranking for that long!

MichaelJGrant @ 10:48 am #

Gosh, what if someone was having open heart surgery during a power failure? Next time I go into the hospital, I’m going to pack some D-cells. What were they cranking this monster with?

I cant believe some of the retarded comments on this, the guy filming is not a mechanic. The guys playing with the starter is, i would never try it that long if i knew it had low/bad fuel flow/pressure.

when it comes to cat engines and fuel filters they dont want you filling the filters with fuel before installation. thats why here in this case you said they are mounted horizontally a lot of others they have them mounted upside down. so all theses comments about you messing up are just dumb! its common to get a little air in the fuel system on a cat when doing an R&R on a fuel filter

@85bmw528eguy OK, sure. I, as a CAD Drafter, who never once placed a finger on this machine, whose primary job was to document utility systems, who took this video of a rough gen start stemming from a (pre-modified) fuel system design flaw on its first start after its first ever PM, a machine that wasn’t even online with the rest of the system yet because of known issues, I guess I should just assume all responsibility and be fired, right?

Read the God damned description, people… Jeezuz!!!

85bmw528eguy @ 2:15 pm #

You would have been fired where I used to work at. My 911 call center that would not been acceptible. We ran our 4 generators every week. we had 2 that were primary and 2 back up. we exercised ATS switch once a month and we had a load bank of batteries in a battery back up system. when we lost power battery back up alway engaged the load and the generators fired up and transfered the load within 10 seconds.

the big cat diesels can be a real pain after servicing the fuel system. I know where your coming from.

W7ENK @ 3:36 pm #

@gaggotgaggot Ugh… Whatever, dude. You’re wrong. Just let it go and stop being a douche.

gaggotgaggot @ 3:36 pm #

@W7ENK just tell the truth you fucked up and you were fired from your job. look at the video you couldnt statrt an emergency generator for a HOSPITAL!!!!! wake up man who would employ you.

W7ENK @ 3:52 pm #

@gaggotgaggot I moved on to new job that paid nearly twice as much. This hospital paid dick, and that’s just not my style.

gaggotgaggot @ 4:45 pm #

@W7ENK thats good to know you ‘worked’. did you get fired?

W7ENK @ 4:45 pm #

@gaggotgaggot Seriously? Wow… thanks!

I worked a this place for over 10 years, and I closely observed the installation of this generator from start to finish. The only reason why I pulled out my camera was because we knew there were going to be starting issues, as this was the first time this machine had been serviced. I’m unclear on what part of my story you don’t believe. I suggest you try reading the description.

Oh, and nice touch, playing that ‘American’ card. Real classy!

gaggotgaggot @ 5:29 pm #

@W7ENK get real and dont be playing with people’s lives. same old shit out of ye american assholes – dont care about lives

W7ENK @ 5:49 pm #

@gaggotgaggot Umm… yeah. This is an auxiliary unit for a set of 3 in another room. This was the unit’s first annual PM. First time anythings rarely go smoothly.

gaggotgaggot @ 6:28 pm #

not much of a back up for a hospital. the lad on the operation table would be dead by now if there was a power cut. the man that design this should be jailed- stupid shit

isaacu @ 6:37 pm #

It doesn’t take a Db meter to know these guys should be wearing better ear protection (if they are wearing any at all)

cksilverado1 @ 6:46 pm #

We have multiple EG’s up to 500kW, but none are air start. None however, take more than a few cranks before they hit on all cylinders.

Is this normal for air start?

AX2361234 @ 7:35 pm #

rudolf diesel würde sich grabe umdrehen, wenn er das hören würde.
von pferden versteht ihr bestimmt mehr.

sniper50cal2 @ 7:43 pm #

@W7ENK thanks for clearing it up man =)

W7ENK @ 7:45 pm #

@sniper50cal2 Correct. This is a backup for a trio of 1.75MW gens. If one of those has a problem, this one kicks on, but I think this one was only set up to handle the most critical of emergency branches (this building has 7 of them). I don’t exactly remember anymore, as I haven’t worked there in over 2 and a half years.

sniper50cal2 @ 8:24 pm #

im guessing if one engine blows a piston during a power failure this engine will pick up the slack for that engine

geo0084 @ 8:29 pm #

nice engine hahahaha.MTU RULES

Iowacouple228 @ 8:45 pm #

Almost sounds like it would have been good to go on a ole pony motor for about 5 minutes then hit it with fual lol got the motr warmed alil first lol

fixitdude74 @ 9:19 pm #

If they could just shoehorn this sucker Superliner!
