I knew what you meant and I won’t be a snotty, know it all. You have to gear it up to get it up to high rpm. Alternators work best at high speed. For that reason generators with permanent magnets are usually used in wind systems. However alternators are common and competitively cheap. They will also need a current applied to their field coils to work correctly but I should mention, before a snotty, know it all corrects me, that they will self generate due to residual magnetism in the rotor. To clarify, an alternator is a a little more tricky to wire up than a generator. So, to answer your question; an alternator can be used in a wind generating system but the turbine needs to be large so it will have enough power to drive a high gear ratio.
Say what?
How would you use an alternator to build another generator? You mean use an alternator in a wind-powered system?
I usually don’t answer unclear questions because then you have to respond with every possible case to cover the lacking information…..BUT…..a car alternator is made specifically for a car. It generates a certain voltage at a pretty high rpm. Wind-powered systems deal with more power, and probably less rpms. To get the most power per revolution you need to design the power-generating portion of the system to be as efficient as possible.
Probably could if you want 12-14 volts dc. Keep in mind an alternator has to have an exciter voltage source to start generating as it has no permanent magnets. You could maybe remove the rectifier and get ac that could be transformed to usable, as all rotating generator outputs are ac. You would need a governor to control speed accurately to match appliance frequency.
With a little modification it will work..
Perhaps an old car generator would work better.
It might lack the capacity you would hope for and you will wind up with dc power. Otherwise, there is no reason it can’t.
