Probably out of the question to build a generator to power your home completely unless it is very small and you use few electrically devices. I have built a 1000 watt, but the hours of labor do not justify the end and it doesn’t supply enough power to really do much good. Also most require batteries for storage which are a pain and then to get that DC to use able power, it has to go thru a inverter. If you just want a small generator for fun, you might subscribe to the magazine below for ideas. http://www.homepower.com/home/.
I have decided to go with solar. Even though it is a high cost investment, power will only continue to go up, but it is much simpler to operate. Wind generators require a lot of maintenance. You migh try these sites to get more info on solar.

The first thing you need to do is figure out how big of a wind generator you need. Most wind generators that are over 1000 watts in generating power are quite a bit more difficult to build. You will need to have your wind generator 15 feet above any obstruction within 300 feet. That is a must.
Some great resources exist but probably reading an article or two about building wind generators would help a lot. Try the resource I listed for a very informative article, there is mention of a website in the article where you can find some great wind generator plans too. Hope this helps, we have built 3 wind generators so far with these plans.

A daunting task !! Are you talking about actually hand-wiring a generator?? Or taking common materials and building one??
Up at the ranch, we use an old wind-generator from our old sailboat… we mounted it on a pole, rigged it to a battery storage system, and now operator emergency lighting off it during the winter.
Others here gave you good links to resources.

I am with Amber I live on a windy hilltop and have looked into them. Too many years to pay back the investment as far as I am concerned. But still thinking about it.
